Gurr vs Shakkar: What Is the Difference?

Gurr and shakkar come from sugarcane, but their shape, texture and kitchen use are different.

Gurr is formed into pieces

Gurr is usually sold as blocks or chunks. It has a deeper caramel taste and works well in winter snacks, desserts and traditional drinks.

Shakkar is loose and easy to measure

Shakkar is a granular or powdered form, making it convenient for tea, porridge, baking and recipes where even mixing matters.

Neither tastes exactly like white sugar

Both have an earthy cane flavour. When substituting them in a recipe, adjust gradually because sweetness and moisture can vary by batch.

Storage matters

Both should be protected from humidity. Use airtight containers and keep them away from wet utensils.
